Poorly built shower
Water damage from shower built completely wrong.

This is a repair that almost became a full tearout. The homeowner had water coming through the kitchen ceiling below the master bathroom shower that was constructed roughly 10 months prior. As I started to remove the materials to pinpoint the issue, it became clear that there was more than one problem with the construction of the shwer pan. First the drainj was not properly installed and the pan liner , although cut out at initial consultation, was nailed to the subfloor and not properly secured to the drain flange, I can assume that the was no material to stop any shower pan builing material from blocking the drain weep holes but more importantly the shower had no preslope and the liner was nailed to the flat subfloor. The pan must have been faioling since day one as the wall studs on the shower valve wall were rotted on the bottom. As i was repairing the wall one of the upper wall tiles came crashing down so the previous contractor didnt properly bond the tile to the wall substrate. This tile falling revealed that the walls had no waterproofing membrane and that the niche was "mickey moused" together and constructed from what appeared to be left over construction materials. In order for me to properly rebuild a shower pan, I have to take out atleast 12" along the entire bottom permitter and expose the wall studs, so I had to remove the face materials of the wedge bench, which then revealed a poorly framed in bench , also appearing to be constructed of disgarded materials. Next came the subfloor removal to reveal yet again another issue with an improperly dropped shower pan subfloor and cut and notched floor joists. This project went from rebuilding a shower pan to adding blocking / sistering joists to bring back structural integrity to the area, then properly dropping down the shower pan subfloor. Along with installing a new drain with p-trap and rockwool nsulation, I now had a structurally sound foundation to build off of. The rot of the wall studs by the shower valve was irradicated and replacement lumber installed along with blocking along the bottom perimeter. The poorly constructed bench was removed and new framing installed of the same footprint but as a free floating wedge bench to tie in better with the already modern appeal of the rest of the bathroom. More of the river rock and bathroom floor tile was removed to allow for waterproofing of a curbless entry shower in accordance with the N.T.C.N.A. All wall tile/wall substrate was removed except for the backwall, which surprizingly check out to be in safe and sound installation condition. A new inset niche was properly framed in and i then constructed a single sloped traditional alternate shower pan and applied waterproofing to the entire area , from bonded drain flange , up walls to top tile height and extending 2 ft. out from shower area. Watertested overnight and installed wall tile, bathyroom floor tile and pan river rock. Gouted and caulked along with installing ceiling drywall in the kitchen below, taped, mudded, sanded and blended texture, this shower was now properly built and will last a lifetime with no worries of any failure or water damage for decades to come.
