Shower pan, niche and bench
Plumbers failed attempt at pan construction
I was called to this shower pan repair as the plumber/construction contractor company hired, who did a good job on the shower valve system, did not know how to complete the rest of the project properly. Apparently his idea of how to construct a shower pan involved dumping mortar in the middle of the shower. The homeowner told me that all the other contractors that came to give an estimate wanted to tearout the entire shower and that it couldnt be finished as is. However, this was not true because I have the knoledge and know all the steps needed to properly finish this project without having to tearout all of the existing wall tile and substrate and keep the shower waterproof and lasting a lifetime once completed. I wasn't able to match up the existing wall tile perfectly as the original shower was built with the home construction a decade prior, so a solution was formed . After constructing the center drain traditional alternate shower receptor (mudpan), I removed the wall tile up to chair rail height, which revealed an issue with the original install, in that the wall tile was "5 spotted" in, not an acceptable practice as it does not give a proper bond from tile to substrate. Setting that aside,, I framed in a new free foating style wall to wall bench with center support. and attached cement board to the walls and entire bench areas. I then constructed the center drain traditional alternate shower receptor (mudpan), New waterproofing membrane was applied and bonded to the existing wall waterproofing. A complimenting color porcelkain hex mosaic tile got installed to the pan and a super format 36"x72" porcelain tile got cut down for the bench, which I miter cut the tile for a "waterfall edge. I then took 24"x24" Travertine tile, sealed it and cut it down to 5 different sizes and installed to the walls on a custom versailles like pattern and topped that off with a matching travertine chair rail trim tile as a transition to the existing original wall tile. The porcelian hex pan tile got used for the newly constructed inset niche back wall. Because of the "5 spot" installation practice of the original installation, I was able to salvage sone full tiles to be able to cut down and use for the side walls of the inset niche and the sides of the grotto -ike entryway. Even though this shower has 6 different tiles in it, being the original wall tiles and oiginal mosaic band and the new travertine wall tile and chairrail, the porcelian hex and the porcelian bench tile, the shower ended up looking as if no repairs had been made and ech tile compliments eachother in a non overbearing way.
